All RF technologies are affected by metal. Installing a Decora Smart Wi-Fi device in a metal box will not prevent it from working; however, it could affect communication distances especially if the box is between the Decora Smart Wi-Fi device and the wireless access point. When given the choice a plastic box is recommended. Metal wall plates are not recommended.
